Maarib Al Hishmawi, a schoolgirl ran away from home after her
parents beat her with a broomstick and poured hot cooking oil over her
when she refused an arranged marriage, police said.
According to The Sun UK, Maarib Al Hishmawi was reported
missing in January after her parents allegedly lined-up a man for their
daughter to marry in exchange for $20,000 (£14,000).
Authorities said Abdulah Fahmi Al Hishmawi, 34, and Hamdiyah Saha
Al Hishmawi, 33, subjected Maarib to "physical abuse" when she said no
to the proposed nuptials.
The 16-year-old, a pupil at Taft High School in Bexar County,
Texas, was found earlier this month when she was taken into care, KSAT
reported.
Bexar County Sheriff Javier Salazar said Maarib was “choked almost to a point of unconsciousness” by her parents.
He said: “This young lady at various times over that time
period was subjected to some pretty bad abuse because she didn’t want to
be married to this person.
“Several times it was reported to us that this young lady was abused with hot cooking oil being thrown on her body.
“She was beaten with broomsticks. At least at one point, she was choked almost to the point of unconsciousness.”
Maarib and her five siblings, aged between five and 15, were placed under Child Protective Services custody.
Authorities are still trying to decide if action should be taken against the man on the other side of the marriage contract.
